As computers continue their exponential growth in computing power, they also produce and consume an ever increasing amount of data. This increase in data rate, along with data volume and variety, is creating tremendous new challenges for data management systems.
Our research focuses on improving data storage, data access, and in situ analysis for accelerating scientific discovery. In the past year, we were working on (1) developing a new paradigm for data storage systems with dynamic performance optimization geared towards scientific data applications, and (2) designing fundamental algorithms and data structures for efficient selection and access by extending our successful bitmap indexing technology. In this handout, we briefly outline the key results from our work on the new data services system named SDS and the FastBit indexing system.
